About our club

Ju Jitsufélag Reykjavíkur (JJFR) (Also Ju Jitsu Iceland) was founded in the year 1997. JJFR has been a member of  Íþróttabandalag Reykjavíkur (Reykjavik Sports Union) since 1999. We strife to introduce the power of traditional Ju Jitsu as a self defence system. It originates from the Japanese Samurai and is regarded as one of the oldest forms of martial arts. Some martial arts systems branch out from traditional Ju Jitsu such as  Aikido and Hapkido and also some competition forms such as Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Our traditional Ju Jitsu syllabus is a pure self defence system so there are no competition events.
JJFR is a member of Shogun Ju-Jitsu International (SJJI) which has been forged from many years of both national and international experience. SJJI’s Chief Instructor is Sensei Simon Rimington who has vast experience in conducting courses and gradings both in the UK and internationally (including Iceland, Sweden, Spain, Sicily, Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Hungary, Israel and Canada).  Sensei Rimington is also a former UK Display Team member and has appeared in various martial arts publications and Advanced Ju Jitsu and Kobudo DVDs.

Anybody is able to train traditional Ju Jitsu, men and women, young and old and you do not need to be athletically built or in top form to learn traditional Ju Jitsu. Everyone trains at their individual speed and the Sensei (the instructor) watches constantly over everyone’s process. You can start training in our club at any given day throughout the year. There are no fixed starting classes. You can start your journey with us at anytime. Our syllabus is very flexible.

Our Senior group is for ages 16 and up. Our syllabus for Senior students (beginners as well) is well streamlined and contains a lot of locks, throws, kicks, punches and mat work. No  worries, you will learn to defend yourself.

We have offered Junior classes since 1999. The lower age limit is for eight years of age. We do have a special Junior syllabus that emphasises on self discipline and to respect others. We teach them that fighting never solves any problems and that Ju Jitsu is only for self defence at all times. Our Junior syllabus mixes martial art, games and fitness exercises.
Our Chief Instructor is Sensei Magnús Ásbjörnsson 6. dan. Along with him we also have few Blackbelt instructors that train both Senior and Junior classes. You can find our teacher’s list here.
